Visiting Costa Rica most people relax in the restaurants and luxury hotels of the capital city, San Jose. But if you have a little more adventure there are some stunning places to see and great things to do only a few hours’ drive from San Jose. Costa Rico is blessed with a great biodiversity, from the lush jungles, to the high peaks of the volcanoes there is something for absolutely everybody. Here are some suggestions for some great day trips from the capital that will make your holiday even more special.
The Coffee Tour
Costa Rica has a world reputation as one of the top coffee producers in the world, not for mass produced coffee but for the growth of quality coffee beans. To visit the coffee growing area of Costa Rica you need to head to the central valley of the country where you can take a tour to see how the famous coffee is produced. The very best time to take a tour is in September through January as that is when the coffee picking season is. You will find that the locals take their coffee very seriously and they call their beans golden beans. The first beans came to Costa Rica in 1720, and the terrain and climate suited the cultivation of coffee perfectly. The mountainous areas around Turrialba, Monteverde, Heredia, Alajuela, and Cartago are the best places to take your tour, and also to take in the stunning countryside.
For adrenaline junkies just forty-five minutes from San Jose you can actually be in thick jungle and enjoy activities such as zip-lining. Just close to the Brauillo Carrillo National Park is an eco-adventure park that offers great activities such as zip-lining, hiking and even an aerial tram. The views of the jungle beneath the zip-line are stunning and the jungle canopy is brimming with bird life and other fauna. If the weather is clear you can even see the Caribbean from the great vantage point. It is actually worth spending a night in the small lodge on site, as many of the creatures that frequent the rainforest are nocturnal and the best time to see them is at night.
Island Day Cruise
If you fancy a day trip to the beach then why not take advantage of nearby Tortuga Island and take a boat out to spend a relaxing day on the fabulous beaches. The voyage will take about an hour and a half through the Gulf of Nicoya with its crystal-clear turquoise waters, and don’t be surprised to see marlin and dolphins swimming in the wake of the boat. The beaches on Tortuga Island are some of the very best in the whole of Costa Rica, and Jaco beach is so perfect that is has been awarded the Bandera Azul Ecologica in recognition of its cleanliness and stunning beauty.
These attractions are just waiting to be explored on a day trip from San Jose. And provide another facet to your holiday to Costa Rica to make your vacation something to never be forgotten.
